Windows Mobile 6.5 and Flash Lite
I have been testing a beta version of Windows Mobile 6.5 on my HTC Touch Diamond phone for the last few days. I found out that the IE Mobile comes with Flash support up to version 8. I am also happy to note that the Flash Lite Distributable Player is working well so far. Way to go.
Update: I have since then got the HTC Touch Pro 2 running the Telstra version of WM6.1 ROM. Again I can confirm that the IE mobile supports Flash up to version 8. Meaning you can use the IE mobile to view a Flash site written for Flash 8 and AS2, less a few features like bitmap effects, etc. I wait eagarly the Flash Player 10.1 for Windows Mobile.
Hey Brian, I just got a htc diamond with alltel with 6.1 do u know where i can get a flash player for it. Been searching no luck though. If so can u send me a link.
thks Chris Gunter

Chris, you can get the Flash Lite 3.1 Distributable Player at:
http://labs.adobe.com/downloads/distributableplayer.html
That is for running FlashLite as standalone application.
Also note that WM6.5 has Flash Player for Internet Explorer Mobile 6 come as standard. That is for viewing html page with Flash content.

I don’t know when WM 6.5 will come out. I was at a MS breakfast at WebDU yesterday and MS staff said the WM6.5 code has been released to OEM already. So it is now up to when the phone manufactures to ship phones with WM 6.5 after they have done their customisation.

I have wm 6.5 on my Samsung SGH-i600 for a couple of weeks now and the browser is much better than the old IEmobile versions.
But as said it supports flash until version 8 by default. More and more flash functionality on the web is based on version 9+ already…

Hey,
Any idea from where to download WM 6.5 Standard for my Samsung SGH-i600?
Thanks

Hi Brian, i stumbled upon your site in search of a flash player for my HTC HD2 with windows mobile 6.5. when i use the browser i think its opera, and i go to you tube ,it doesnt play the clips. it says i havn’t turn on javascript,or i have an old version of the flash player. Can you help me out here?? thanks in advance, wouter
ps. im from the netherlands so my english isn’t all that =)
wouter said this on November 27, 2009 at 11:30 am |
The default browser on HTC HD2 is Opera and even if it supports the Flash Lite player, it would only be able to browse Flash site based on Flash player 8 or earlier. Adobe said during its MAX conference that they are working on full Flash player 10.1 for mobile devices including WM phone. Hopefully 2010 is the year when that becomes available.
brianchau said this on November 27, 2009 at 9:19 pm |
wouter, there is a YouTube app specifically for HTC phones, I would give that a try.

As above, the HTC HD2 wont allow me to view flash content on the internet, I’ve tried installing various versions, lol and makes, and am reduced to using Skyfire to browse 😦

Thanks, guys. I feel a lot better after reading your posts. I thought I was the only loser who could not view flash content on my spanking new HTC HD2. Sigh.

At present, there is the Flash Lite 3.1 Distributable Player for Windows Mobile available both as a download from Adobe site or as an OTA (over-the-air) installation for some countries for selected devices. This player is for running a standalone Flash application, outside the browser. For Flash Lite player as a browser plug-in, it is not user installable but dependant on the availability of the player shipped on the device. I think it is available on some HTC phones running WM6.1 (or 6.5) and IE. As it is based on Flash Lite, it would not work for website that requires Flash player 9 or later. The best solution would be when Flash Player 10.1 becomes available on WM phone, as it would support the latest flash version, as well as supported OTA installation and perhaps user installation. It isn’t out yet so it remains to be seen.

Hey guys, I just installed Skyfire on my HD2…at least now I can view flash content on my HD2 with it. I don’t particularly like the experience but hey at least it works….until something else comes along. Sigh.

hey I got the htc tilt 2 but I need to download the flash player for it and i have window 6.5 . Do you know how to get the file on the phone for me?
Chau said this on December 28, 2009 at 5:50 pm |
Unfortunately, the Flash Player 10.1 for WM isn’t available yet. And that is for the browser plug-in. As for the standalone playback, the distributable Flash player has been discontinued and until AIR 2.0 for WM exists (if ever), there is no substitution. I know it is disappointing. Wish it could be better.

glad to see theres gonna be a proper version of flash for wm… i was almost starting to regret buying the HTC HD2.

Hi, I also have a HD2. i got it the same time as my girlfriend got her iphone 2 weeks ago. All i can say is i wish i got the iphone as the HD2 is buggy in many ways. The media player built in has tag issues and just crashes, No flash player. oh and the camera is terrible. Its a shame becasue the phone itself looks great but from now on the answer to the PC or MAC question for me will be MAC.

any chance you could post a download link to flash lite 3 (discontinued from adobe) so we i could view flash 9 content on my htc touch2…tks

There is no point if the player is not publicly available from Adobe. Mobile World Congress 2010 is coming next week, let’s see if there is any new development in this front.
brianchau said this on February 11, 2010 at 3:57 am |
I also bought the HD2 because I thought it looked like a decent piece of kit. I’m not best pleased with the phone. The camera is nowhere near as good as my old Sony Ericcson K700i. I can’t get active sync to work either – according to my brand new Windows XP PC the device is not available/connected when it infact is. I can connect various other devices and transfer data back and forth with no issues. So the fact that I can’t get BBCi Player to work due to lack of Flash Player compatibility more or less tells me this is not a smartphone – it’s a dumbphone. I hate admitting it but I should have bought an I-Phone.
Nutzohhazelnutz said this on February 10, 2010 at 10:57 pm |
Sorry, I can’t help you troubleshoot the syncing problem. I haven’t used XP for many years now, since Vista came out and now Win 7. All I can say is the Window Mobie Device Center in Vista and Win 7 is a breeze to work with. As for BBC iPlayer it doesn’t matter if the phone supports Flash player 10.1 or not, I wouldn’t be able to watch it here in Australia as the site is geo-blocked for UK viewers only.
brianchau said this on February 11, 2010 at 4:06 am |
Hi Brian, please 3 questions not related to flash player issue,
1- Do you have an idea of how can i get my HTC HD2 be able to read & write Arabic language please?
2- As i understood from above(and after getting disappointed of the comparison between HTC and I phone), shall i have ANDROID installed instead of WM6…,
3- i am scared to try installing applications and be obliged later on to maintain it like formating and reinstalling WM so would you please guide me through the way of installing and WM on my HTC HD2, i know how to do that on desktop/laptop…
thanks in advance
ouss said this on February 12, 2010 at 3:24 am |
1. Sorry I can’t help you with Arabic. You may want to try the XDA forum at: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=531
2. It makes no difference what phones you have. You can only view BBC iPlayer videos if you are in UK. It is geo-blocked for UK viewers only.
3. Installing WM app is simply click on the cab file that you have copied on the phone. Uninstalling the app is simply click the app from the “Remove Programs” panel. As simple as that. Can’t get any simplier, at least that is for WM phones.

You know, adobe realese the beta2 of Adobe Flash Player 10.1
I always abstain of using beta software versions. Is there any one using this beta version? And any comment about it? Works or not with the regular contents of WM?
Ersan Gok said this on February 16, 2010 at 12:49 am |
The current 10.1 beta is for the desktop (Win/Mac), not for the WM yet.

I wouldn’t hold the hope too high as HTC has never said there would be a WM7 upgrade for HD2. For me there is still a lot to love about WM6.5. I have recently flashed my Touch Pro 2 with DeepShinning X4 ROM and I love it a lot. I would miss the HTC Sense if I move to WM7.
brianchau said this on March 2, 2010 at 5:37 am |
hi guys, I also purchased hd2 and was shocked to see that it doesn’t play flash contents. grrr I hate hd2 builders. well as far as the ActiveSync issue is concerned, the phone requires a restart when connected.then on it works flawlessly. well for camera there are some updates available on htc website, that should certainly help. lastly the screen id way too big which makes it really difficult to carry in the pi key. 😦

Hello everyone!
I have a strange problem. I don’t know why, but I installed flash player 7 for WM, and then when I read that Flash Lite 3 was better I decided to remove it from my WM. Everything went ok, but now I don’t have Flash Lite 3.0 anymore! I checked my registry and noticed that some keys with references to Flash Lite files where deleted after removing Flash Player 7. I have restored those keys, but still not working. Anyone had this problem before?
Netflash said this on March 19, 2010 at 1:23 am |
If all things fail, you can always reflash WM ROM and do a clean install from there. Of course, you would need to back up your data.

Hi Brian
I have an HTC HD2 and think it is brilliant. So far, my only problem is I seriously battle to get YouTube videos up and running. The YouTube app works well, but I dont want to use it as I dont have an unlimited date contract. I have found downloading videos off YouTube with RealPlayer works but it only manages to convert about half the videos I download into something the HD2 can play.
Do you know of any stand alone flash player that I can load onto the HD2 so I can merely copy videos across and watch them without having to convert them?
If not, do you know of a good YouTube download/convert manager. I have tried many and RealPlayer is the best of a very, very bad bunch.
Thanks
Murray

but here one thing.. Im trying to run teamviewer threw my opera 10 mobile. with a fixoperaflash. I came to this point, that I only saw a flash play button. and then it showed a flash9 logo. would be nice if i could run remote desktop threw the browser.. but there’s no flash 10 on the market for Windows Mobile. any ideas?

As far as I know there is no Flash player 10.1 for Windows Mobile. There was some suggestions that HTC HD2 comes with Flash Lite 4 for PIE. However, I don’t have HD2 myself so I cannot test to confirm. Flash Lite 4 would be able to run apps written in AS3.
